Configuring a Physical Interface on a Cisco ASA 5505

When configuring a physical interface on a Cisco ASA 5505 you might notice that you can’t just give it an IP address and bring the interface up, you have to place the interface in to a VLAN and give the logical VLAN interface the IP address, if you don’t you will get an error like the following:

ERROR: This command can only be configured in VLAN interfaces.

We assign an IP address to the logical interface for VLAN 26 and bring up the interface.

SC-ASA#config t
SC-ASA(config-if)#interface vlan 26
SC-ASA(config-if)#ip address 192.168.26.1 255.255.255.0
SC-ASA(config-if)#no shutdown

Add the interface to VLAN 26 and bring that up too.

SC-ASA(config)#interface ethernet 0/0
SC-ASA(config-if)#switchport access vlan 26
SC-ASA(config-if)#no shutdown

Enjoy.
